Hyperbaric Oxygen

There is unfortunately no compelling scientific data to support the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the treatment of brain injury or epilepsy. There are numerous testimonials on the internet from parents of children with brain injuries, and from practitioners who offer (sell) the therapy. Many of these opinions are well-intentioned, but they likely reflect placebo effect in many cases. At worst, some of these advertisements represent scientifically careless or fraudulent claims. In theory, this therapy should not pose much risk, but there is solid scientific data indicating that administration of too much oxygen to newborns can cause brain injury. This is the rationale for careful monitoring of supplemental oxygen in newborn intensive care units.
