Several anti-seizure drugs are ill-advised in the treatment of infantile spasms, and have the potential to worsen the seizures. These include carbamazepine (Tegretol®), oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®), phenytoin (Dilantin®), and phenobarbital. Two new drugs, lacosamide (Vimpat®) and rufinamide (Banzel®), appear to exhibit a mechanism of action which might also adversely impact infantile spasms, though this has not been reported in the medical literature yet.
